With a reported 77 bicycle thefts inside city limits since the beginning of the year, Decatur police have scheduled a second bicycle registration event. This one will be 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the Columbia Theological Seminary, 701 South Columbia Drive, in the parking lot off Kirk Drive.

According to spokeswoman Jennifer Ross, 38 thefts have been reported since Aug. 1. Of those, 29 (or 76 percent) have been on the south side, most in the Winnona Park and Oakhurst neighborhoods.

Ross added that police need a bike’s serial number to enter it into national database. Serial numbers are usually stamped into the bottom of the frame or on a small metal placard under the frame.
