Decatur’s commission on Monday night approved the Parkwood neighborhood in the city’s western sector as a Local Historic District. The area was previously in Historic Druid Hills before getting annexed — per neighborhood petition — into Decatur last July. The “historic” designation means the homes can’t be demolished, it puts extensive restrictions on any infill construction, and all exterior changes require approval from the city’s Historic Preservation Commission. Parkwood has 75 homes on 35.2 acres, with 62 of those parcels included in the district. Most are ranch-style homes built in the 1950s. This becomes Decatur’s fifth Local Historic District, along with six other neighborhoods on the National Register of Historic Places.
