Decatur commission to select interim replacement for mayor pro tem
According to Decatur’s city charter, the city commission must appoint an interim replacement to serve the balance of Mayor Pro Tem Kecia Cunningham’s term. Cunningham announced her immediate resignation Monday night to take a job as key accountant for Public Financial Management Inc., in Harrisburg, Pa. Because there are fewer than six months left in her term, which expires Dec. 31, the city is not required to hold a special election.
City Manager Peggy Merriss said she expects the commission to appoint a replacement at their next meeting on Sept. 8, although, she pointed out in an email, “the charter is silent on when they have to make the appointment.”
It’s also silent, she said, on electing a new mayor pro tem, although Merris anticipates that will also be done on Sept. 8.
So far Brian Smith is the only person to announce that he’s running for Cunningham’s District 2 seat. Qualifying for candidates is Aug.31-Sept. 4, with the election Nov. 3.
