An early-morning shootout between two robbers and a homeowner ended with one of the robbers dead and a 71-year-old neighbor wounded by a stray bullet, police said.

The incident began shortly before 1 a.m. in the 3000 block of Creel Road in south Fulton County.

Two men wearing masks kicked in the door, went to the bedroom of a 24-year-old man, demanded money and started shooting, police said.

"The father heard the commotion, grabbed his weapon and began shooting at the perps," Fulton County Cpl. Kay Lester said. "He struck one and the other is believed to have left the scene in a vehicle."

The suspect, Tracy White, was killed. His age was not released.

During the shootout, a bullet went through the wall of the house and into the adjacent home, hitting the 71-year-old resident in the left thigh.

He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was injured in the incident.
