The body of a 45-year-old Atlanta man who drowned in Amicalola Creek near Dawsonville was recovered Monday afternoon, authorities said.

A diver with the Dawson County dive team found the body of Ramiro Ponce-Ruiz just before 1 p.m., according to Rick Lavender, a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Ponce-Ruiz had been swimming with family and friends Sunday afternoon at Devil’s Elbow, a popular swimming spot on the creek, Lavender said.’

Lavender said that witnesses told rangers that the man swam out from the bank and dove under.

“When he surfaced, he was struggling and then went back under,” Lavender said. His body was found in water about 20 feet deep.
