A forgery admission left a dad without a job and his son picking up after University of Georgia fans on Saturdays.
Sandy Springs Parks and Recreation Director Ronnie Young is out of a job after he admitted forging a signature on his son’s court-ordered community service form, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Ronnie Young’s son Reid Young was sentenced to 60 hours of community service after he was arrested for underage alcohol violations, according to the station. Reid Young was given the option to complete his hours in Sandy Springs where he lives.
“Normally, if you’re local in Athens, we assign you to a community service site,” Athens-Clarke County Probation Chief Dale Allen told the news station. “We keep control of the community service log sheet where the hours are recorded.”
But Allen told Channel 2 some college students such as Young choose to do it in their hometown.
That’s where things went wrong for the two Youngs.
Reid Young chose to clean Sandy Springs parks for his community service, but unknown to Allen, Ronnie Young served as Sandy Springs Parks and Recreation director.
“There’s no law or regulation that says you can’t do community service for a relative, but that’s not best practice,” Allen told Channel 2.
When Reid Young went to turn in his community service form, a secretary in Allen’s office noticed a difference in signatures for that week.
“The employee (the secretary) talked to whose name appeared to be on there stated he did not sign the letter,” Allen said.
That’s when Allen said the elder Young admitted to forging his employee’s signature.
Young doesn’t face criminal charges in connection with the forgery, Allen said, but he is no longer the city’s parks and recreation director nor is he employed with Jacobs Engineering, a city contractor.
The company did not tell Channel 2 whether Young was fired or resigned or for what reason.
As for Reid Young, since no time sheets were provided to prove he completed the first set of community service hours, a judge ordered he redo them but this time cleaning up after UGA football games.
