Lawrenceville is warning city utility customers of recent phone scams. Customers are receiving calls stating their account is past due and threatening to disconnect their service.

In one case, the scam looked as if the call was actually coming from city hall. The person making the call demanded the customer pay by a pre-paid card acquired from a local grocery store. The suspicious customer came in to city hall to verify in person. Police are now investigating.

Lawrenceville does not call customers to demand payment by phone and customer service representatives are not allowed to receive credit card numbers for processing by phone.
