More than 50 cremated remains were found Monday in a storage unit in Jonesboro, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

The remains were found at Store Here Self-Storage along Tara Boulevard by a storage unit renter’s friend, GBI spokesman Nelly Miles said. The friend called the GBI when they were found.

Miles said the remains date to 1967, but no later than 2011. The GBI took inventory and catalogued the remains but is not conducting a criminal investigation.

“The next step is to identify the remains and contact next of kin in an attempt for them to collect the remains,” Miles said.

Miles said the remains may have been stored by Pope Dickson, former director of Pope Dickson and Son Funeral Home. Dickson is now living in a nursing home. The funeral home closed in May 2012 after 66 years in business due to the economy and Dickson's poor health.

Anyone who thinks their loved one was one of the remains is asked to call the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office at 404-244-2500.
