Covington man drowns in Alcovy River

A 59-year-old Covington man has drowned in the Alcovy River, state officials said.

It was one of two fatalities in Georgia waters this holiday weekend, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Henry Terrell went swimming late Saturday in the Alcovy River in Factory Shoals Recreation Park in Covington, DNR spokeswoman Melissa Cummings told the AJC. His family found some of his belongings alongside the river, and the Newton County dive team recovered his body Sunday morning.

"The assumption right now is he just went swimming and got in a situation he couldn't get out of," Cummings said.

The other fatality occurred Sunday night on Tybee Island, when a woman was thrown off a boat making a sharp turn in Chimney Creek. Savannah metro police say 38-year-old Dawn Piper was struck by a boat propeller.

Cummings said five boating accidents were reported to DNR this weekend.
