For the second consecutive morning, DeKalb County authorities and eastside motorists Friday were dealing with a broken water main near Lithonia.

The latest break occurred before 4 a.m. on Covington Highway near DeKalb Medical Parkway, a couple of miles north of Thursday morning’s break on Evans Mill Road.

Doug Turnbull in the AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB Traffic Center reported that all lanes of Covington Highway were blocked throughout Friday’s morning rush hour.

Two lanes, one in each direction, were reopened about 9:40 a.m.

Friday’s break wasn’t just an inconvenience for motorists.

“My water’s down again and I’ve got to go to work,” said nearby resident Chris Thompson.

“People need water to brush their teeth, take a shower and flush their toilets,” Thompson said. “We’re looking very, very pitiful right now.”

“This is crazy,” said Marian Nolley, who lives in the nearby Wellington Cove subdivision.

“This happens frequently and we have no water,” Nolley complained. “Since the first of January, we’ve had at least six pipes bust.”

Thursday’s break, which happened before daybreak on Evans Mill Road near Mall Boulevard south of I-20, was repaired later in the day.
