Cobb County Board of Education members voted 6-1 last week to refuse to expand the new theater for North Cobb High School from 750 seats to 1100 for an extra $3 million.
In opposition was Chairman Randy Scamihorn who first suggested this change in August when it was approved 4-2-1.
Scamihorn said he was proposing the theater expansion to serve all of Cobb and the projected increasing population of North Cobb High which is in his district.
Opposed to the expansion in August were David Banks and Susan Thayer with Scott Sweeney absent.
Also recommending denial, by votes on two occasions, was the Cobb County School District’s Facilities and Technology Citizens Oversight Committee.
Thayer previously noted the special purpose local option sales tax budget for school projects is estimated to continue on its trek of being 6 percent under projections, amounting to $48 million below budget.
Croft and Associates of Kennesaw was approved 6-0-1 in August as the architect of the theater for $882,856.
Construction for $17.7 million is expected to begin in May with completion of the theater by the end of 2017.
