Sales tax revenue exceeds expectations

People are spending more money in Cobb County than expected, according to one measure.

Sales tax revenue from the penny-on-the-dollar Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax has exceeded projections by 3.3 percent for calendar year 2011, said Cobb County Schools finance chief Mike Addison. Kennesaw State University did a study two years ago, during the depths of the recession, that projected $10 million in receipts for Cobb schools from January through September, Addison said. Cobb CVB changes name, logo

Representatives of the Cobb County Convention and Visitors Bureau unveiled the marketing organization’s new name and logo on Thursday.

The organization will now be known as Cobb Travel and Tourism and feature a new bright orange and grey logo. Prior to the change, the CVB had not upgraded its brand for at least 20 years, said president and CEO Holly Bass.

Center asks for food donations

The Center for Family Resources is looking for staple food donations for 1,500 low-income Cobb families for a Thanksgiving program Friday and Saturday at Jim R. Christian Aid Mission asks for donations

Christian Aid Mission Partnership (CAMP) in Austell is seeking $10 donations to its “Thanks Giving” program.

Auburn mayor wins leadership award

Women in Municipal Government, a constituency group of the National League of Cities, has honored Auburn Mayor Linda Blechinger with the 2011 Annual Leadership Award.

The award recognizes a local female official for “unique and outstanding leadership in local government,” according to a written statement.

Blechinger, who was elected mayor of Auburn in 2008, received the honor Friday during an award luncheon at the Congress of Cities and Exposition in Phoenix. Joel Anderson

Ga. 316 interchange work begins today

Construction will begin today on a new interchange at Ga. 316 and Collins Hill Road. Contractor GP’s Enterprises will begin clearing vegetation and other preliminary work. The $37.4 million project includes 2.2 miles of new roadway and two new bridges over Ga. 316. The work is expected to be finished in December 2014. David Wickert

Lawrenceville council runoff to be Dec. 6

Lawrenceville voters will return to the polls Dec. 6 for a city council runoff election.

Former Lawrenceville Mayor Rex Millsaps will face incumbent Peter “P.K.” Martin IV in the race for the council’s Post 4 seat. According to the unofficial results from last week’s election, Millsaps got 656 votes while Martin finished with 616. A third candidate, Renita Hamilton, received 312 votes. Joel Anderson

‘Christmas Carol’ returns to the Aurora

The Aurora Theatre’s Anthony Rodriguez will resume his solo performance of the Charles Dickens holiday classic, “A Christmas Carol,” from Dec. 1 through Dec. 18.

Senior Services awarded $25,000 grant

The Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia has awarded a $25,000 grant to Senior Services North Fulton for its Transportation Options Program for Seniors. The program offers seniors transport to medical appointments. In 2010, Senior Services provided 1,268 round-trip rides through TOPS. Children’s shelter wins $540,000 grant

Young People Matter, which runs the first emergency shelter for runaways and homeless youth in DeKalb and surrounding counties, recently won a $540,000 for its operations.

Avondale Estates mayor ready to move on

After a narrow election victory, Avondale Estates’ re-elected mayor Ed Rieker says he’s ready to move beyond an occasionally contentious campaign, where he and challenger David Milliron fired off public emails countering one another. “I’m hoping it’ll take about six weeks,” he said, “for all the yard signs to come down, and for everyone to become re-united in helping, among other things, to bring development to our downtown.” On Tuesday Rieker beat Milliron 625 to 595 in an election where 42 percent of the city voted.

Decatur schools name teacher of year

Decatur schools superintendent Phyllis Edwards named Robyn Tibbetts, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Renfroe Middle School, as the district’s 2011-12 Teacher of the Year. A graduate of Decatur High, she received her bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University and her master’s from Walden University. Decatur sidewalk construction begins

Workers will commence pouring concrete on two long-discussed sidewalks- and crossing-improvements projects later this week, said Decatur’s Assistant City Manager David Junger. These include a small median at South Candler Street and Dougherty Street, a busy crossing that will also receive ramp improvements, new striping and L.E.D. flashing lights. There will also be a nine-foot wide median refuge with a safer crossing on East College Avenue, near Agnes Scott College’s main entrance. East Point residents can start voting this week for three City Council races that required a runoff after last week’s election.
