Inmate released, re-arrested on theft charges

When he was released from the Cobb County jail earlier this month, Christopher Alan Estes was given back his personal belongings, including the shirt he was wearing when he was arrested. But instead of his own shirt, Estes, 37, of Marietta, allegedly kept a jail T-shirt. When he was spotted Wednesday in Woodstock wearing the shirt for inmates, he was re-arrested and charged with theft by taking, a misdemeanor, jail records show. He was re-booked into the Cobb County jail, where he remained Monday.

Person shot during fight at Kennesaw club

One person was shot during a fight at a Kennesaw nightclub Friday night. But the person shot didn’t realize it until several miles away, according to police.

The fight started between two people at Diamond Dave’s, located in a shopping center on Cobb Parkway. The person hit by gunfire was traveling in a vehicle in the Acworth area when he realized he was injured.The victim, whose name was not released, was transported to the hospital. Police ID man shot, killed at his home

Police identified the man who died after being shot in the front yard of his home late Sunday as Damatre Hedrick, 25.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. Sunday outside the victim’s home on Beech Drive off Memorial Drive.

Smyrna Fire gets pet oxygen masks

A veterinary clinic in Smyrna will deliver three oxygen mask kits for pets to Smyrna Fire Department station five at 3 p.m. Tuesday, 750 Cooper Lake Road. Smyrna has five fire stations and one kit for reviving pets from smoke inhalation. Cat Care of Vinings is halfway to a goal of $2,100 to supply each station with six pet oxygen masks. Floyd Road cleanup on Saturday

Volunteers are asked to join the Mableton Improvement Coalition at 9 a.m. Saturday to collect trash along Floyd Road between the Mableton Post Office and the intersection of Floyd and Hicks Roads.

The meeting place will be in front of the Pizza Hut in the Publix shopping center on Floyd Road.

MIC will provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags and bottled water.

Marietta to hold SPLOST meeting

Marietta will hold a 2016 SPLOST information meeting 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 205 Lawrence St. City staff will explain Marietta’s list of about $57 million in proposed projects including road improvements on Powder Springs Street west from South Marietta Parkway to Sandtown Road and a new bridge at Old Highway 41 and Church Street Extension.

Sleeping man wounded in drive-by shooting

A Gwinnett County man was shot early Monday during an apparent drive-by shooting, police said.

The shooting happened about 12:15 a.m. in the 2900 block of Trotters Pointe Drive, where a resident “reported that her fiancé was shot in the back while sleeping and it appeared it may have been from a drive by-type shooting.

Police are looking for a four-door pickup truck, possibly black or maroon. The victim was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, and is expected to survive. Mike Morris

Kidney group helps Recycle Center

Snellville’s recycling center will see a more than $10,000 annual revenue bump thanks to American Kidney Services. Under the terms of a recent agreement, AKS will provide one truck to be used as a drop-off point for clothing and other ‘hard goods’ donated by residents 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the center located at 2531 Marigold Road next to Briscoe Park. AKS guarantees $1,200 per month for one year for placing its trucks in the center’s parking lot, plus 11 cents per pound on items collected. Roadwork set for western Cherokee County

Work’s expected to start soon on a road improvement project in western Cherokee County. The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $3.9 million contract to do redo the intersection of Ga. 20 and Ga. 108, including realigning White Road and Mt. Woodall to speak to Forsyth Republicans

The Johns Creek Ocee Park Athletic Association is registering young players for its fall baseball leagues. Sandy Springs to debut $3.6M linear park

Sandy Springs’ Abernathy Greenway Linear Park will officially open with a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting Thursday at the western edge of the project, along Abernathy between Brandon Mill and Wright roads.

First planned in 2007, the $3.6 million, 6.6-acre project developed in conjunction with the widening of Abernathy includes a plaza, gardens, lighted trails, playgrounds and a playable art park. Mark Woolsey for the AJC

Klan recruiting in Atlanta neighborhoods

The Ku Klux Klan has been leaving recruiting flyers on cars in Candler Park and Cabbagetown as part of a national drive to add to its membership roles.

The grand wizard, Robert Jones, confirmed that the flyers were a product of the KKK.

The KKK wrote in the flyer: “Save the land. Join the Klan.” and “We are a law-abiding Christian organization.”

Battle of Peachtree Creek drama on Friday

The Atlanta History Center will begin its 150th anniversary observance of the Battle of Peachtree Creek at 8 p.m. Friday at the center’s McElreath Hall Woodruff Auditorium, 130 West Paces Ferry Road NW with the musical drama presentation, “A Sweet Strangeness Thrills My Heart: The World of Sallie Independence Foster, 1861-1887.”

Storyteller Dolores Hydock and music historian Bobby Horton will interweave Sallie’s story with camp songs, period favorites and original tunes.

Free GWTW exhibit open through 2015

“Wilbur G. Kurtz: History in ‘Gone With the Wind’” is open through next year, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, at the Kenan Research Center, Atlanta History Center, 130 West Paces Ferry Road NW.

The free exhibit presents journals, correspondence, drawings and photographs of Kurtz, who guided the film’s production as historian and technical advisor.

Man ejected from SUV on Interstate 85

A man died early Monday when he lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 85 at North Druid Hills, according to DeKalb County police.

A 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling on the access road when the driver attempted to enter onto the entry ramp of northbound I-85. He lost control of the SUV, causing it to go down an embankment and flip into the roadway. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the SUV. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No names have been released. Fran Jeffries

Interim commission seat draws 20

Twenty people have applied to become a temporary DeKalb County commissioner representing the southeastern portion of the county.

A panel of three citizens will narrow the field to two candidates, and then Interim DeKalb County CEO Lee May will choose a finalist for the board’ consideration.The interim commissioner will serve at least until the end of suspended DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis’ trial, which is scheduled to begin in September.

Tree protection focus of meeting

Brookhaven City Council held a special called work session on Monday to review the city’s tree ordinance. Many residents are concerned that as homebuilders tear down older homes, so goes a 40 or 50-year-old tree.

Currently, the city’s ordinance is identical to Dekalb County’s tree ordinance.

The Henry County Board of Education will host three meetings in the next two weeks to adopt the millage rate for the 2014-2015 school year. Clayton access TV ads channel

The Clayton County Board of Commissioners announced recently that the county’s local government access station – Clayton County Access Television is now available to AT&T U-verse Digital TV subscribers on Channel 99. CCTV has been accessible through Comcast since 2004 and can currently be viewed on Comcast Channel 23.

The combined television access expands opportunities for more residents in Clayton County to tune into their county government to learn about changes in government, programs, resources and events.
