McDonough hosts

New Year’s eve event

McDonough City Hall will be closed today and will resume its normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours on Wednesday. City Hall also will close on Jan. 1 and resume normal hours on Jan. 2.

Jonesboro church holds Christmas dinner

Jonesboro United Methodist Church will hold its annual Christmas dinner known as Wesley’s Table on Christmas Day.

The meal is open to the hungry, the lonely and anyone desiring a home-cooked meal.

The menu includes ham, turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and dessert.

The dinner will be in the Christian Activities Building behind the sanctuary on Main Street in Jonesboro.

From Main Street turn onto College Street and take the second left into the parking lot.

Reservations are encouraged but not required.

Northside Hospital center recognized

Northside Hospital’s Child Development Center has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which the hospital said is the nation’s leading organization of early childhood education professionals.

To earn accreditation, Northside underwent extensive self-study, measuring itself against ten NAEYC standards and 400-plus accreditation criteria.

Assessors visited the center that serves children from six weeks to 12 years old, and plan unannounced returns throughout five-year accreditation. MICHAEL ALPERT FOR THE AJC

Christmas tree recycle begins Wednesday

Gwinnett residents can recycle Christmas trees at about 30 locations from Dec. 26 through Jan. 18.

The trees must be stripped of all lights and decorations. Artificial trees will not be accepted.

Lithonia selects new police chief

Lithonia has selected a former DeKalb County Police chief to be the head of its department.

Eddie J. Moody retired from the county in 2004 with more than 30 years of service.

He has since worked in private security but expressed an interest to returning to the small city where he grew up.

City officials did not respond to requests for information about Moody’s salary. April Hunt

Kennesaw to build $1.8 million skate park

Kennesaw plans to start construction in January on a $1.8 million skate board park at Swift Cantrell Park off Old Highway 41.

Ground breaking will be 11 a.m. Jan. 10. The 40,000 square-foot concrete facility will be funded by the 2011 SPLOST and private and corporate donations.

The Kennesaw Skatepark cq will be one of the largest in the southeast and capable of hosting small and large skate boarding events.

The first phase should be complete in six months.
