Marietta seeking WWII veterans for parade
Marietta and the Georgia
Military Vehicle Preservation Association are looking for World War II veterans to participate in the city’s Let Freedom Ring parade July 4.
A military vehicle will be provided for vets to ride in along the 1.5 mile parade route.

Soccer fields coming
to Rock Springs Park
Gwinnett has approved three new, lighted soccer fields and a building for concessions and restrooms for Rock Springs Park at the intersection of Old Peachtree Road and Rock Springs Road between Suwanee and Lawrenceville. The 113-acre park currently has a football field with a lighted walking track and six lighted tennis courts plus a playground, pavilion, and a two-mile paved multi-purpose trail. Fulton marshals
offer teen program
The Fulton County Marshal’s Department is taking applications for its junior deputy program this summer.
The program is open to teens 12 to 16 who are Fulton County residents, attend school in the county or has a family member who is a county employee. During the two-week session, to be held July 7 - 18, participants will learn about careers in law enforcement and criminal justice as well as life skills.
The application deadline is June 6.

Stone Mountain library to sell used books
The Stone Mountain-Sue Kellogg Library is holding a used book sale at 10 a.m. June 13 and 14 at 952 Leon St., Stone Mountain.
Proceeds from the book sale will pay for library activities and supplies and fund a scholarship for an advanced degree in library science.

Battle of Pickett’s Mill
has commemoration
The 150th Commemoration of the Battle of Pickett’s Mill will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Pickett’s Mill Battlefield Historic Site, 4432 Mt. Tabor Church Road, Dallas with battle reenactments and guided hikes.
Pickett’s Mill is one of the nation’s best-preserved Civil War battlefields.

CHEROKEE
Cherokee signs off on park improvements
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners last week gave approval for a new park in Holly Springs. The 1.1 million project went to low bidder BM and K Construction, with funding to come from the county’s park bond. The Hickory Road park will include a playground, picnic pavilions, restrooms and walking trails. Commissioners also signed off on roughly $1.3 million in improvements to JJ Biello Park.
