ARC recognizes Marietta youth program

The Atlanta Regional Commission has recognized a youth mentoring and after school program in Marietta with an award for community involvement and collaboration.

Smyrna asks for help with 10-year plan

Smyrna seeks answers to an online survey available through May 2 about a plan for the city's future. Thursday deadline for auction donations

Thursday is the deadline for silent auction donations for the West Cobb Business Association during the monthly luncheon from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22 at Lost Mountain Baptist Church, 5400 Old Dallas Road, Powder Springs.

Businesses are asked to donate such items as gift cards, artwork, gift baskets, jewelry, a free product or service or a free consultation with proceeds benefiting the “wish list” from Cobb County Area 5 Schools.

Park event will support healthy living

Braselton festival three-day event

Public meeting to learn about Gwinnett Village

The Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District and the Atlanta Regional Commission will host an open house for input on a project to connect Lilburn and Norcross via a multi-use trail along Indian Trail Road 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Norcross Human Services Center, 5030 Georgia Bell Court. This is part of the feasibility study to understand impacts and costs.

Cherokee woman jailed for shooting boyfriend

Cherokee County sheriff's deputies say David Welchel, 40, of the Freehome community was taken to North Fulton Hospital Sunday after being shot in the back and shoulder by his girlfriend Jessica Couch, 31. She said she though he was an intruder. Couch, who admitted to being on methamphetamine at the time, is charged with aggravated assault and is jailed without bond. Deputies say the couple waited about two hours before calling 9-1-1. They also say nine poisonous snakes were found caged in the home, prompting further investigation. Mark Woolsey for the AJC

Rabid raccoon attacks Cherokee resident

North Georgia Health District officials say a raccoon which attacked a Waleska resident and a pet earlier this month has tested positive for rabies. The property owner shot the raccoon April 5 after it behaved aggressively and lunged at him. The resident wasn't hurt, but the raccoon bit the dog. The dog is being quarantined for 45 days after getting a rabies booster shot. Mark Woolsey for the AJC

Regents to meet at UNG in Dahlonega

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia will hold its monthly meeting on the Dahlonega campus of the University of North Georgia today and Wednesday. The Board and its various committees are scheduled to weigh in on a number of items, including tuition, mandatory and elective student fees and budget allocations for fiscal 2015. Board members will also consider renovations to the iconic Tech Tower on the campus of Georgia Tech University. The sessions will begin at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the campus Library Technology Center. Cherokee Spanish student wins award

A junior at Cherokee County’s Etowah High School has won the 2014 Junior Travel Award for her work on the National Spanish Examination and her overall Spanish skills. Katherine Morawa is one of only 16 U.S. students winning the honor from among 160,000 who take the exam annually.

It includes travel to Spain, accommodations, guided excursions and other opportunities to soak up Spanish culture. She and the other winners will head there in July. Mark Woolsey for the AJC

Jennie Drake Park to have improvements

A $14,000 matching grant awarded to Jennie Drake Park will be used for capital improvements to increase community access to the northwest Atlanta park.

The grant from the nonprofit group Park Pride, plus a matching amount to be raised by the public, will enable the community to realize its vision for the park, on Waterford Road at Oldknow Drive in the historic Collier Heights neighborhood.

Hospital donates defibrillators to police

Eastside Medical Center in Snellville is donating three automated external defibrillators to the Lithonia Police Department.

The AED devices are used to resuscitate patients suffering from abnormal heart rhythm or sudden cardiac arrest.

The donation will put the lifesaving devices in the hands of responders who are often the first on the scene of a cardiac emergency.

Eastside Medical will also train police officers in CPR and the use of the devices.

Adult basketball league wins state champs

Miles for Meals Walk set for May 3

Henry County's 20th annual Miles for Meals Walk starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Jason T. Harper Event Center in McDonough's Heritage Park. It is the single largest fundraiser organized by the Henry County Council on Aging to benefit Henry County Senior Services' various programs such as Meals on Wheels. Clayton State students seek young patients

Clayton State University's Dental Hygiene Clinic is looking for children patients. "To meet their graduation requirements, senior dental hygiene students are required to provide oral care for a certain number of children," said Dr. Gail Barnes, chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene which runs the clinic.
