Marietta Museum of History gets a rent break

The Downtown Marietta Development Authority agreed on Thursday to reduce the Marietta Museum of History’s monthly rent to $1,000 for four months. The museum asked its landlord, the DMDA, to forgive the $3,750 monthly lease for two years to keep the museum off the Marietta Square and Aviation Wing on South Cobb Drive and Atlanta Road afloat financially. The museum raised admission prices $2 this month which director Jan Galt said should increase revenues by 20 percent. Admission is $7 for groups and adults, and $5 for children five and older. Austell firefighters honored for service

Two Austell firefighters were honored Monday for their years of service by Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins and the City Council.

Capt. Brandon Merritt has been a city employee for 15 years and Firefighter Chris Chabot for 10 years.

Plaques were awarded to the men by Jerkins, and service pins were given by Councilman Scott S. Thomas, chairman of the city’s Fire Department Committee.

Recycling day at Jim Miller Park Saturday

Keep Cobb Beautiful will host an electronics recycling day on Saturday at Jim Miller Park.

Most electronics will be recycled at no charge. Televisions will be accepted for a $10 fee. Large household appliances, such as refrigerators, will not be accepted.

Volunteers will also be collecting new or gently-used shoes to benefit the Soles4Souls charity that has distributed 16 million pairs of shoes to people worldwide.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park, 2245 Callaway Road in Marietta.

Meeting on Six Flags Drive needs Thursday

A Six Flags area community meeting will be held Thursday in Austell.

Cobb County Department of Transportation officials will seek comments on transportation infrastructure improvements and land use along Six Flags Drive. Leaders honor late NAACP activist

Gwinnett County civic leaders and community activists gathered Friday to honor the memory of the late Rev. John C. Stewart Jr.

Stewart, who died at age 49 in 2006, served as Gwinnett County NAACP president. Under his tenure, the Gwinnett NAACP held forums on education, economic empowerment and elections, among other things.

Legion post to ship care packages to troops

The Loganville American Legion Post will pack and ship care packages for soldiers in Afghanistan for the holidays. The Barrett-Davis-Watson, GA Post 233 at 4635 Atlanta Hwy. in Loganville will pack 66 boxes on Monday and 300 boxes on Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. until noon. Johns Creek installs recycling receptacles

Now visitors to Johns Creek parks have access to recycling for their water bottles and soda cans. The city has placed 40 bottle-shaped recycling receptacles in city parks.

“We’ve had a number of people ask us about recycling at the park, but we didn’t have any recycling receptacles in the past,” said James Swope, solid waste manager. The 30-gallon containers, placed near trash cans, are expected to siphon 25 to 35 tons of recyclable waste a year from landfills. The containers cost about $100 each, and are made from recycled plastic. Patrick Fox

Nature Center to host holiday shop on Dec. 3

The Chattahoochee Nature Center at 9135 Willeo Road, Roswell, will host its annual holiday shop on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Seniors can get help with energy bills

North Fulton seniors can get help Monday and Tuesday signing up for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which offers help paying energy bills.

Households with members age 65 or older who meet income guidelines, or any household facing a life-threatening crisis, are eligible.

Help will be offered both days from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Facility, 6500 Vernon Woods Drive, Sandy Springs.

Spring baseball registration kicks off

Online registration for Hopewell Youth Association’s spring 2012 baseball season is now open for Milton residents at the group’s Web site, www.hopewellbaseball.org.

Wildlife Habitat Project to provide grants

The Johns Creek Community Wildlife Habitat Project has launched an effort to provide educational grants to local schools.

The new program is funded through grants from the Cox Conserves Heroes Award program and Whole Foods Market of Johns Creek.

One of the main goals is to educate the community about conservation and the importance of maintaining its natural environment.

The project has also partnered with the National Parks Service to provide schools extra assistance.

Veterans Day parade today in Atlanta

The Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association of Atlanta will host the 30th Annual Veterans Day Parade in Atlanta today. The parade starts at 11:11 a.m., beginning on Peachtree Street south of Ralph McGill/Ivan Allen Blvd. It will proceed south on Peachtree Street, turn right on Baker Street toward Centennial Olympic Park, and turn left on Centennial Olympic Park Drive toward CNN Center and Philips Arena. Ice skating rink to open Nov. 19

Installation of downtown Atlanta’s only outdoor ice skating rink began this week at Centennial Olympic Park. The process takes approximately two weeks and involves constructing a 30-by-40 meter tent, building the 108-by-60 foot rink and producing ice. David Rotenstein, a resident with a doctorate in folklore who has worked in historic preservation for decades, will present a lecture Tuesday on DeKalb County’s Jewish communities. The DeKalb County state lawmaker who is responsible for introducing a bill to create a city of Brookhaven will host two informational meetings this week. Both meetings from state Rep. County negotiates for library property

Fulton County is negotiating to buy two properties for new libraries being built as part of a $275 million countywide construction program approved by voters in a 2008 bond referendum. The commission directed staff to acquire 1655 Hollywood Road for the Northwest Atlanta branch and 1332 Metropolitan Parkway for the Stewart-Lakewood branch. The board has also approved architectural and engineering contracts -- for $707,100 with Collins Cooper Carusi Architects for Northwest Atlanta and $676,350 with Smith Dalia Architects for Stewart-Lakewood.
