State of the City speech
Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon will give his State of the City address 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Smyrna Community Center, 200 Village Green Circle. Meadowcreek students in cooking contest
Meadowcreek High School students will represent the state at a national culinary arts competition in California.
The students will participate in a cooking challenge during the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America 2011 National Leadership Conference, which runs through Thursday. They are Tyler Rivera, Nick Patma and Vincent Tompkins.
During the 2010-11 school year, the students were enrolled in Meadowcreek’s Pro-Start class, which is taught by Debbie Grant and is part of a two-year program sponsored by the National Restaurant Association. D. AILEEN DODD
Deadline near to enroll in online charter school
The registration deadline for enrolling in Gwinnett County Schools’ new online charter campus is approaching.
The extended registration period runs through Thursday. Students and their parents must come to the Gwinnett Online Campus at 2595 Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross to sign up in person. Registration will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today through Thursday. D. AILEEN DODD

Foreclosure prevention workshop Wednesday
Fulton County’s Office of Housing and Community Development will hold a workshop Wednesday to help residents falling behind on mortgage payments because of job loss, cuts in work hours, illness or other issues.
“How to Prevent Foreclosure” will be held at the Roswell Neighborhood Senior Center, 150 Warsaw Road, from 10 to 11 a.m.

DEKALB
Group wants to form community garden
The South Fork Conservancy will hold a meeting today at the QuickShot Firing Range to discuss building a community garden on land on Zonolite Road once the contaminated property has been cleaned of asbestos.
Officials from the federal Environmental Protection Agency and DeKalb County will be there to explain the cleanup process of the environmentally sensitive flood plain where the garden may be located.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at 1199 Zonolite Road off Briarcliff Road. Those attending should bring their own chairs.

Hapeville residents may see discolored water
The Hapeville Public Works Department and the fire department will flush and test hydrants this week. The flushing will take place during the day and night.
