The Braselton Police Department named Michael Steffman captain. He attended Davidson County Community College before earning his P.O.S.T. certification from the Georgia Police Academy. He was worked in law enforcement 14 years, the last nine in Braselton. Karen Huppertz

The Cherokee County School District plans its first-ever bus tour for business and community leaders Oct. 29.

Brookhaven names interim attorney
Brookhaven City Council recently appointed Thompson Kurrie Jr. as its interim city attorney, to replace Bill Riley after his sudden departure.
Riley had helped Brookhaven with its creation and launch last December and will remain as the city’s solicitor.
Kurrie is former chairman of Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce. His salary is still under negotiation. April Hunt

Potter named Teacher of the Year
Garth Potter, economics and world history teacher at Union Grove High School, was named Teacher of the Year for the Henry County School System. The announcement was made during the Harvest of Heroes ceremony Thursday night at the Henry County Performing Arts Center. A veteran teacher of 16 years and volunteer with the Union Grove High School marching band, Potter will now represent the system in the Georgia Teacher of the Year competition. Panetta elected to civil service board
Marietta businessman Lawrence “Larry” Panetta will fill the Post 4 slot on the Civil Service Board through 2016. Marietta City Council approved the board’s recent election results choosing Panetta for the appeals board for fire and police department staff below the rank of deputy chief.
