Preservation award nominations now accepted

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for its 2013 Preservation Awards, which recognizes projects and individuals who contribute to the preservation of the state’s historic resources.

Son gets life for killing father

A Fulton County jury has convicted a 26-year-old Atlanta man for killing his 83-year-old father, Richard Taylor, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Daniel Taylor was sentenced to life in prison for the May 12, 2011, murder. After the elderly Taylor was fatally shot in the chest, his wife, who had awoken to the sound of the gunshot, saw her son standing over her husband with a gun in his hand, the DA’s Office said.

One clinic date left for free health screen program

This month Atlanta residents can get health screenings, for free or at discounted costs, through the Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration program. The last clinic date is Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Barge Road Highrise, 2440 Barge Road, S.W.

Medicare, Medicaid and some other medical insurance is accepted. Flu shots cost $25. Information: 404-613-6000.

Avondale Estates won’t require uniform mailboxes

With the U.S. Post Office mandating street side mailboxes, Avondale Estates rejected a plan requiring a uniform box, possibly consistent with its Tudor style. Standardized boxes cost $300 to $700. Most mailboxes in the city’s historic district are located at the front door, and these homes are temporarily grandfathered in.

South DeKalb police precinct coming along

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners recently approved a contract that will handle major construction work at its new south precinct for the police department.

The $680,000 contract with Litchy Construction will help finalize the relocation of the police precinct from its current location on Candler Road to a former Toys R Us store at 2842 H.H. Shepherd Dr.

Construction work should be completed by year’s end, leaving small details for the opening early next year. April Hunt

Henry gets $1.1 million road grant from GDOT

Eighteen roads in Henry County are on track for resurfacing with help from a grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

According to county officials, the work will be completed by the Henry County Department of Transportation and the GDOT grant will provide funding reimbursement on recycled asphalt, bituminous tack coat and striping not to exceed $1,113,408.44.

The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted this week to enter into a contract with the state to provide materials for the resurfacing of Commissioners entered into a contract with GDOT for the grant that will provide materials for the resurfacing of 16.762 miles of county roadways.
