Gwinnett

Jimmy Carter bridge closure begins Nov. 14

Gwinnett DOT will close the I-85 at Jimmy Carter Boulevard bridge for the diverging diamond interchange crossover at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, weather permitting. The bridge will open to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17 with the new interchange configuration. The project involves shifting traffic to the opposite side of the bridge, which will make left turns onto the interstate more efficient and improve traffic flow across the bridge. The bridge will be closed to all through-traffic during the weekend, although construction will not impact right turn access to or from I-85. Planned detours detailed at www.gwinnettDDI.com. Pedestrian traffic should continue to use the detour route for at least one month following crossover during the construction of pedestrian walkways. After crossover, construction will continue on the center median and pedestrian facilities, while crews finalize the signals, interchange lighting and pavement markings. The project is expected to be substantially complete in spring 2015.

Fayette schools note Ebola precautions

The Fayette County public school system is assuring parents that adequate precautions against the Ebola virus are already in place. The county issued a statement Friday saying that regular student use of hand soap and sanitizer, plus routine building cleanings, are the same measures used to prevent other infectious diseases, including the flu. School nurses have been updated on Ebola symptoms, and new families registering in the county will be screened for recent travel to Ebola-affected areas.
