Early childhood conference set for next month
Thousands of early childhood education teachers, administrators, experts, and advocates will gather next month in Atlanta.
They will come together to learn from experts about the latest research and best practices at the 2012 National Association for the Education of Young Children Annual Conference & Expo.
The conference and expo take place Nov. 7-10 at the Georgia World Congress Center, 285 Andrew Young International Boulevard.

Do The Math Tour coming to Atlanta
Environmental writer and 350.org founder Bill McKibben is bringing his 21-city tour designed to kick-start the next phase of the climate movement to Atlanta with a show at Nov. 20 at Variety Playhouse.

Organizers hope the “Do the Math” tour will spark a nationwide fossil fuel divestment movement.
Each event features a rotating cast of speakers and musicians including Naomi Klein, Mason Jennings, and other special guests.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu will appear via video to urge people to join a new movement based on the divestment effort that helped end apartheid in South Africa.

County holds focus groups on seniors’ needs
Fulton County’s Office of Aging is holding focus groups for seniors and their caregivers to give feedback on programs and service needs.
The focus groups stem from findings of the county’s State of Seniors Survey, conducted in April and May, which found transportation was the most often-reported need.
“Join the Conversation” meetings will be held on four dates at the four senior multipurpose centers, each with two two-hour sessions starting at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The first two are at Atlanta locations: Monday at the Mills center, 515 John Wesley Dobbs Ave., N.E.; and Wednesday at the Darnell center, 677 Fairburn Road, N.W.

Sandy Creek student chosen for advisory council
Sandy Creek High School student Benjamin Weinhardt has been chosen to serve on State School Superintendent John Barge’s 2012-13 Student Advisory Council. Members provide input on how state policies affect classroom operations, as well as discuss other education-related issues. Weinhardt was one of 50 students chosen from among more than 750 who submitted essays.

Powder Springs adds planning, zoning member
A new member was added to the Powder Springs Planning and Zoning Commission Monday during the Powder Springs City Council meeting.
Kalia Watkins joins Stan Kaady, Johnnie Purify, Wanda McDaniel, Nancy Farmer, Doris Dawkins and Patrick Rascoe as commission members.
Their public hearings are held at 7:30 p.m. with remaining meetings for this year scheduled on Monday, Nov. 26 and Dec. 17 in the Council Chambers, 4488 Pineview Drive, Powder Springs.
