Georgia college students have until the end of the day today to apply for the state's new low-interest loan program. Applications are at: www.gacollege411.org.
Lawmakers provided $20 million for the Student Access Loan Program when they overhauled the HOPE scholarship. It is for families that received some aid but need more, officials said.
The maximum award will be $10,000. The average is expected to be $3,500, which would allow about 5,700 students to receive the loan. The loan will carry a 1 percent interest rate.LAURA DIAMOND

The committee is expected to vote on a package of guidelines to follow in developing the new maps.

Researchers at Emory University have found that high doses of the hormone progesterone can kill certain cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.
The results, scientists say, suggest the hormone could be used to fight neuroblastoma, the most common form of cancer affecting small children. More research is needed to determine the best dosage, how long the treatment should last and whether it should be used alone or along with radiation and chemotherapy. MISTY WILLIAMS
