Powder Springs Road bridge opening delayed
Opening of the Powder Springs Road bridge replacement over the Silver Comet Trail has been delayed by rainy days from Aug. 6 to Aug. 23.
The $881,417 cost is being paid by the city’s 2011 special purpose local option sales tax.
Through part of October, Silver Comet Trail users will have to continue to use the five-foot sidewalk detour while an 85-foot-long lighted box culvert is being built by North Georgia Concrete.

Principal accused of child molestation
Jack Duane Hibbs, 57, of Marietta, has been charged with four counts of aggravated child molestation.
According to detectives, a male victime who was 15 years old at the time of the alleged crimes, recently reported to authorities that he had been molested at the family residence.

Austell residents asked to avoid street
Austell city officials are advising residents of the Bishops Run Subdivision to avoid Sweetwater Lane while it is being resurfaced.
Crews began resurfacing the road from Austell Road to Cambrian Terrace on Thursday.

Austell sets Aug. 27-29 qualifying dates
Qualifying times are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27-29 in Room 107, Austell Threadmill Complex, 5000 Austell Powder Springs Road for at-large Post 1 and Wards 1 and 3 on the Austell City Council.
The qualifying fee is $360, which is 3 percent of the $12,000 base salary.
City Council members also are eligible for health, dental and pension benefits with health and dental paid from their city salaries.

Gwinnett to open new state patrol post
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of a new Georgia State Patrol Post at 9 a.m. today at Georgia State Patrol Post 51, 1645 Pleasant Hill, Duluth.

Citizen police academy taking applications
The Snellville Citizen’s Police Academy will begin a new 10-week program Sept. 12 designed to educate the community about how the Police Department functions.

County wants input on transportation projects

Man critically injured by falling tree branch
A 29-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday afternoon when he was hit by a falling tree branch in Cherokee County.
The man, whose name was not released, was flown to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition. The man was working with a tree service in the 800 block of Freehome Road when he was hit in the head by the branch around 3 p.m., Cavender told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Phone scam alert in Cherokee
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office is warning residents of a phone scam involving a man impersonating a deputy.
Officials say two residents got a call saying the county was collecting outstanding traffic fines from 2011 by phone, and that residents could get a discount if they paid immediately.
The Sheriff’s office says anyone getting such a call should refuse, and report it to 9-1-1.

Cherokee exhibit traces history of cotton mills
The Cherokee County History Museum and Visitors Center presents the temporary exhibit “Life with the Mills: The Canton Cotton Mills” through Sept. 14.

Qualifying period nears for Cumming election
Qualifying for the municipal election in Cumming has been set for 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug.26-30 at the Cumming city clerk’s Office, 100 Main St.

Meeting may determine referendum
The fate of a $59.6 million bond referendum that would finance extensive renovations to Renfroe Middle and Decatur High schools, may be determined Monday during a Decatur City Commission work session scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at City Hall.
Each commissioner will likely declare where they stand on the referendum, and it’s possible they may take a vote during the 7:30 p.m. regularly-scheduled meeting, though it’s not currently on the agenda.
Commissioners must vote before Aug. 30 for the referendum to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
