Foundation honors recovery center
The Cobb Community Foundation this week named the Extension, a residential addiction recovery program for homeless men and women in Cobb, as nonprofit agency of the year.
The philanthropic foundation awarded the program $5,000 for making a significant community impact in Cobb County.
More than 20 nonprofits in Cobb applied for the grant.

Construction to start on health care center
Gov. Nathan Deal and Cobb Commission Chair Tim Lee are scheduled to speak at a groundbreaking event 11 a.m. Tuesday for a mental health care facility at 1775 County Services Parkway, Marietta.
The center, expected to open in spring 2015, is part of a Cobb County Community Service Board expansion of community based behavioral healthcare services.
The agency provides help to Cobb and Douglas County residents with mental health and developmental disabilities.

Sugar Hill has consistent natural gas billing
Sugar Hill is offering citizens a Level Billing Program to provide a consistent bill for gas utility services each month. The City will continue to read gas meters and provide usage on utility bills. Duluth explains Unified Development Code

Police host multicultural festival
The first annual Gwinnett Multicultural Festival will take place noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the North Atlanta Trade Center, 1700 Jeurgens Ct. in Norcross. Creek Crawl cleanup event rescheduled
Because of inclement weather, Johns Creek officials have rescheduled the city’s annual Creek Crawl for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds Stock Farm, located on Abbotts Bridge Road at the creek. Volunteers from the city, Keep Johns Creek Beautiful personnel and Chattahoochee High School students, among others, will pick up trash along a half-mile stretch of the waterway. Construction forces parking changes
Site preparation work for the Mason street Parking Facility being built near the Forsyth County Administration Building in downtown Cumming has cost some parking spaces. A construction fence was extended Thursday, resulting in the loss of two rows of parking spaces behind the building. Trailfest event, trail opening Saturday
A major segment of Woodstock’s growing trail system will open this weekend, in conjunction with the Greenprints Alliance’s fifth annual Trailfest. The Towne Creek and Noonday Creek trails stretch from the downtown area to near Ga. 92/I-575, a 1.5 mile segment. The ribbon-cutting is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Market and Elm Streets downtown. The daylong Trailfest will feature a 5k run, live music, food, beverages and vendors. It’s a fundraiser for the nonprofit alliance and its trail expansion work.

Olympic medalist to give GSU commencement
Olympic bobsledder and silver medal winner at the Sochi Winter Olympics, Elana Meyers, will be the keynote speaker at Georgia State University’s spring commencement 2 p.m. May 10 at the Georgia Dome.

Selig Enterprises Inc. announced that, after two years, “litigation between Good Growth DeKalb and DeKalb County has been resolved,” paving the way for redevelopment of Suburban Plaza. Selig “expects to begin construction immediately” on the 50-year-old shopping center – currently about 70 percent vacant — just outside Decatur but long coveted by the city for annexation. Tours offer glimpse of Stone Mountain’s past

Nursing care group to host pageant

Miles for Meals Walk set Saturday morning
Henry County’s 20th annual Miles for Meals Walk starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jason T. Harper Event Center in McDonough’s Heritage Park.
It is the single largest fundraiser organized by the Henry County Council on Aging to benefit Henry County Senior Services’ various programs such as Meals on Wheels.
Each walker receives a free T-shirt and a meal ticket for lunch with a $25 donation, and there will be prizes and entertainment as well as a bake sale.
