County seeks to fill job openings today

The Georgia Department of Labor’s Cobb-Cherokee Career Center at 465 Big Shanty Rd. in Marietta will help Preferred Personnel Solutions fill a number of job openings for warehouse and janitorial workers in Cobb County. The jobs will last for one year.

Smyrna mayor hosts golf tourney

Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon is hosting the annual 2012 Arthur Bacon Golf Tournament, named after his father, a former mayor of the city. The 2-day tournament is May 5 and May 6, on two courses. Smyrna to close road lanes to install bridge

Smyrna’s City Council recently approved closing three lanes on a section of Spring Road this weekend for the installation of a $1.35 million pedestrian bridge. The 10-foot wide and 227-foot long bridge will give pedestrians a safer route over CXS railroad track south of downtown Smyrna. The project will be funded by federal dollars and countywide 2005 SPLOST funds. Kiwanis Clubs to host youth golf tourney

The Lost Mountain and Marietta Golden “K” Kiwanis Clubs will host their 17th annual youth charity golf tournament May 2.

The event will kick off with registration at 9:30 a.m., and a shotgun start at noon. The tournament will be at The Golf Club at Bradshaw Farm, 3030 Bradshaw Club Drive, Woodstock. Proceeds will help support local youth organizations.

Evermore CID names officers

Board members of the Evermore Community Improvement District elected Chris Garner as chairman and Kenny King as vice chairman for 2012.

Entrepreneur award winner announced

CubeVibe, a human resource management software provider, is the winner of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Amazing Entrepreneur contest.

Peachtree Ridge to perform ‘Hairspray’

Peachtree Ridge High School will perform the musical “Hairspray” this week.

Roswell surplus to be discussed

Two public meetings will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday on what to do with $456,878 in federal funds intended for Roswell, but never used. The money was allocated by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department, and Fulton County is proposing it go to nonprofits and developers to spend on senior and family housing in 10 other cities as well as the unincorporated area.

Fulton examines sister-city roles

The Fulton County Commission will reconsider setting guidelines before entering into any more sister-government relationships, such as the one with Bahia, Brazil. Another resolution, sponsored by a majority of the board, is slated for a vote Wednesday.

Last month, Commissioner Liz Hausmann suggested the county first find out if there will be any economic benefit and make sure the county has enough staff to handle extra responsibility, but the panel held off amid concerns about requiring a “detailed demographic profile.” That language has been removed. Perdue to speek at Woodstock school

Former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will speak at Woodstock Middle School on Wednesday. Perdue, who served as the state’s chief executive from 2003-11, will address 8th grade students in the school auditorium at 10 a.m. on a variety of issues and will then take questions. Cherokee school board examins contract

The Cherokee County Board of Education will consider extending the contract of Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo at its meeting on Thursday. The contract would run two additional years, through Aug. 20, 2015. The board will also weigh adoption of an internet safety policy. Among other provisions, the plan would require online monitoring to limit student access to material deemed inappropriate. River Eves students raise pennies for leukemia

For a fourth straight year, students at Fulton County’s River Eves Elementary have raised more than $3,000 through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program. The $3,339.39 raised by the Roswell school can be used to fund the work of researchers, tissue-type 10 people as potential bone marrow donors and pay prescription co-pays for patients. APD makes changes to LGBT liason office

A new officer has been named to be the Atlanta Police Department’s two liaison with the city’s lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender communities.

Officer Kristin Knight, a patrol officer for about seven years, will partner with Brian Sharp, the other LGBT liaison. Knight is replacing Patricia Powell who has been assigned to APD’s background and recruitment unit. Rhonda Cook

Catholic charities, law school launch law clinic

Catholic Charities of Atlanta and John Marshall Law School founded the Immigration Law Clinic which opens this fall.

The clinic will provide legal aid to Catholic Charities of Atlanta clients and give second- and third-year law students experience under the direction of licensed attorneys, the law school said. The clinic will offer clients help with filings for benefits, violence against women and crime victim petitions and temporary protective status. GDOT seeks transit input

The Georgia Department of Transportation seeks public input on the multimodal passenger terminal proposed for downtown Atlanta. GDOT has started preparing an environmental impact statement and will hold public meetings on the need and purpose of the project, as well as alternatives and potential impacts.

DeKalb County’s parks department will host a summer food program for youth.

The federally funded program runs June 4 to Aug. 3 and ensures children up to 18 have nutritious meals in the summer.

Gas customers to see discounts

The DeKalb County Commission recently inked a deal with Gas South that is designed to result in county residents getting exclusive discount offers.

The agreement does not cost the county but allows Gas South to use DeKalb’s logo for marketing purposes. The deal is also structured so that other utilities can make similar deals with the county, in a bid to gain more market share. April Hunt

Commissioner honored for ‘green work’

Georgia Piedmont Technical College recently honored DeKalb County Commissioner Kathie Gannon for her work in promoting sustainability and “green” efforts in the county.

She received the 2012 Investing in Dreams Award for her work on the county’s recycling program, working to create DeKalb’s Green Commission and for events to promote and educate residents.

Federal grant to aid summer camps

The DeKalb County Commission recently agreed to use federal funds to help low- and moderate-income youth participate in summer camps.

The $92,278 in block grants will provide $300 vouchers for kids between 5 and 15 to join camps, recreation activities and educational programs run by the county or approved non-profit agencies.

Mother and son sentenced for animal cruelty

A mother and her son, both from Decatur, recently pleaded guilty to five counts of animal cruelty after their Smooth Fox Terrier was found severely emaciated with tumors in her mouth and stomach, DeKalb County Solicitor-General Sherry Boston said.

Shirley McClain, 58, received 20 days in jail and can serve them on weekends. Michael McClain, 38, got 45 days in jail. Both must perform 200 hours of community service at DeKalb’s sanitation department and pay $6,500 in restitution to American Fox Terrier Rescue Inc., which rescued and paid for the dog’s medical care. The dog, named “Blaze,” survived the ordeal and has been adopted.

History Center hosts book signing

DeKalb’s History Center hosts a book signing and lecture today with Sharon Foster Jones, author of “Atlanta’s Ponce de Leon Avenue.” Jones will give a brief presentation on the history of Ponce, from its beginnings as a country road conveying visitors to its healing springs to the contemporary rediscovery of its venerable architecture and deep history. She’ll also sign books and answer questions. The event’s 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Historic DeKalb Courthouse located on Decatur’s square. It’s free of charge.

Tiny firefighter was right fit

A 4-foot 11-inch firefighter rescued a 1-year-old, Sunday.

Rosa Tullis, 50, said when her crew arrived on Bryant Drive in East Point, it was obvious she’d be the go-to woman. The hole was barely a foot across in diameter, and there was no way to send a firefighter and a ladder down to rescue the child. Even the petite Tullis wouldn’t fit with a ladder and her gear.

Wearing a T-shirt, pants and a harness, Tullis was lowered down and hoisted the boy up so he could be pulled to safety. He was out shortly before 8 p.m. Alexis Stevens

The Fayette County Public School System’s After School Program begins pre-registration for the 2012-13 school year on May 1. The program offers supervised activities and homework assistance until 6:30 p.m. Registration before May 15 is $40 and $45 tuition for the first week. Event teaches equine awareness

Farmers market opens Wednesday

Peachtree City’s popular Farmers Market will begin its summer schedule on Wednesday.

Local produce, soaps, honey, breads, pasta and other products – much of it organic – will be offered for sale on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market sets up in the Aberdeen Shopping Center parking lot next to Bank of America.
