The Roswell City Council has approved a $1.9 million contract to construct the final phase of the Riverwalk Trail.
Integrated Inc. submitted the lowest bid of five for the project to complete the boardwalk from the Chattahoochee Nature Center to the Cobb County line at Willeo Park. Funded by a federal grant, the work is hoped to be completed next summer, Jeff Pruit, interim director of recreation and parks for the city, told the council.
“This is another good-news story for the city that we’ve been planning for 16 years,” Pruitt said. Roswell residents in 2000 approved a bond referendum that included funds to construct a seven-mile greenway along the Chattahoochee River with parks, trails and other recreational and educational facilities.
Mayor Jere Wood said Roswell is now working with Cobb County to replace a bridge at the county line to connect the Riverwalk to the Lower Roswell Road Trail. Eventually, he said, the path will connect with the Silver Comet Trail, which runs 61.5 miles from Smyrna to the Alabama state line.
