A 16-year-old Norcross High School student was in a medically induced coma at a Gwinnett County hospital Friday after he was seriously injured in an alleged car-surfing incident, Channel 2 Action News reported.

After arriving at school Wednesday morning, Alex Mora joined seven friends ditching classes and going riding in a classmate’s SUV, police said. The teens ended up speeding through a neighborhood off Beaver Ruin Road in Norcross.

As many as three youths, including Mora, were riding outside the vehicle, holding onto its side, when the driver took a corner too fast, and the SUV rolled, police said. The vehicle overturned on Mora, crushing his legs.

Mora sustained injuries including a broken pelvic bone and leg and was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he remained Friday.

Family members told Channel 2 that Mora is stable and is expected to remain in a coma for at least another week, but doctors tell them the worst is over.

The SUV’s driver, 18-year-old Alejandro Rodriguez, was arrested and charged with hit-and-run – for allegedly leaving the scene of the accident – reckless driving and driving without a license, police said.
