A 59-year-old Atlanta man died in a chain-reaction wreck Friday night that may have been caused by a medical issue, Cobb County police said.

Warren Thomas was dead on arrival at WellStar Kennestone Hospital, authorities said. Investigators believe he may have experienced some type of medical distress that led to the crash.

The fatal accident happened at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Akers Mill Road around 7 p.m.

The preliminary information indicates that Thomas, who was driving a gray 2009 Chevrolet Impala, was stopped in the eastbound right turn lane of Akers Mill Road to southbound Cobb Parkway, then entered the intersection on a red light. Thomas’ vehicle was hit by a maroon 1999 Mitsubishi Montero, driven by 35-year-old Viengkhong Thilakhoun of Atlanta. The Mitsubishi overturned, and Thomas’ vehicle was hit again by a gray 2012 Toyota Camry, driven by Shawnta Herrington, 26, of Marietta, investigators said.

Herrington declined medical treatment at the scene, while Thilakhoun was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the wreck is continuing. Anyone with information on the incident should call Cobb authorities at 770-499-3987.
