An armed man attempted to rob a Gwinnett County bank Thursday afternoon, police said — but had to settle for stealing an employee's purse.

According to Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington, the unidentified suspect was waiting at the Piedmont Bank at 5100 Peachtree Parkway when an employee arrived for work around 6:45 a.m. He forced the employee inside at gunpoint and "demanded that the employee open the vault and not activate any of the security alarms inside the bank."

"The employee told the suspect that she did not have the access codes to the vault," Washington said in a news release. "After tying the employee up and leaving her in the restroom, he took her purse that contained her cellphone and personal cash."

The suspect, described only as a man over six feet tall and around 220 pounds, then walked out of the bank and got into the back seat of a silver Jeep Liberty, police said. That car was later found at a nearby apartment complex, but the suspect has not been apprehended.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwinnett police at 770-513-5300. Tipsters can also remain anonymous — and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000 — by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting crimestoppersatlanta.org.
