Cops ID man killed in I-285 crash

Cobb County police on Monday identified the man killed in a multi-vehicle crash on I-285 last week as a 29-year-old Gwinnett County man.

Raul Maldonado-Lopez of Norcross was killed in the Thursday afternoon wreck on eastbound I-285 just west of the Chattahoochee River bridge, police said.

The Cobb police S.T.E.P (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) unit authorized the release of the name after the man's next of kin were notified in Mexico, police said.

Police previously said a preliminary review of the accident indicated a white 2006 International semi tractor-trailer, a black 2006 Lexus GS430 and a black 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck were heading east on I-285 when they collided.

Pierce said one of the vehicles made an improper lane change, but it wasn't clear which one did so because of conflicting accounts. The pickup truck rolled over several times.

Maldonado-Lopez was a passenger in the pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 50-year-old Enio Tejada of Lawrenceville, was taken by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The investigation was continuing. Anyone with information about the wreck was asked to contact police at 770-499-3987.
