Cops: Drunk mom fought with officers

March 28, 2012

A Cobb County mother is accused of driving drunk with her toddler in her SUV and then taking a swing at officers at the Smyrna City Jail, according to police.

Laura Scott Anderson, 29, of Mableton was stopped shortly before 11 p.m. Friday after a Smyrna police officer noticed she was having difficulty staying in her lane on Atlanta Road, according to an arrest warrant obtained by the AJC.

"In speaking with said accused, the officer observed the odor of an alcoholic beverage about her breath and person; observed that she fumbled while attempting to retrieve her driver's license; observed her eyes to be watery and ‘glassy;' observed her pupils to be extremely and abnormally large; and observed said accused to appear confused at times and slow to answer questions," the warrant states.

A preliminary breath test device registered positive for the presence of alcohol on Anderson's breath, but she declined to participate in further sobriety tests, police said. At the time she was stopped in her silver, BMW X5, Anderson had her 20-month-old child with her, the warrant states.

Anderson was arrested by Smyrna officers and transported to the city's jail, according to police.

At the jail, Anderson tried to hit officers and had to be restrained, the warrant states.

"While giving verbal commands to ‘Stop fighting!' ‘Stop resisting!' and ‘Get on the ground!' both officers attempted to, and finally did, restrain said accused," the warrant states.

Anderson was taken to Cobb County Jail on Saturday on charges of obstruction of an officer, DUI, child endangerment and failure to maintain lane, jail records show. She was released early Sunday after posting $6,500 bond.
