Cops: DeKalb suspect killed man who punched his mom

DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies and the U.S. Marshal are looking for a homicide suspect they say has a history of running from the law.

Marcus D. Ventress, 28, accused of fatally shooting Ryan Guider on May 26, "should be considered armed and dangerous,” DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Adrion Bell said.

Authorities said Ventress shot Guider as retaliation. Law enforcement sources told investigators that Guider “burglarized the home of Ventress, stealing jewelry, cash and drugs and punching Ventress’ mother,” Bell said.

Bell said Ventress also is wanted for aggravated assault on accusations he shot into an apartment in the 5800 block of Treecrest Parkway, thinking Guider lived there.

Ventress had multiple arrests between 2002 and 2009 in Elkhart County, Ind., about 125 miles southeast of Chicago, for charges that included attempted murder, drug possession, gambling and resisting arrest, according to Indiana jail records.

The man spent six years in prison on drug charges and was on parole and probation at the time of the DeKalb shooting, Bell said.

Anyone with information on Ventress’ whereabouts is asked to contact the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office at 404-298-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 404—577-8477. Tips to Crime Stoppers can be made anonymously, and awards are available for anyone providing information leading to an arrest or prosecution.
