After the home invasion, one of the victims did her best to straighten up the scene where another had been shot to death while fighting the intruders. She could hardly find anything taken. Just a couple of cellphones.

But she found something had been left there: one of the gunmen forgot his own cellphone, loaded with “selfies,” according to a DeKalb County police detective’s testimony Tuesday.

Investigator Keith McQuilkin said the photos were confirmed to be of Desuan Subar, 24. The defendant was in court for a preliminary hearing on murder charges in the death of Justin Alexander Bryant, 21.

Subar had been wanted for some time after the Jan. 29 killing outside Decatur. He was arrested last month after an hours-long SWAT standoff on Diamond Key Road in Stone Mountain, where he allegedly hid in an attic while neighbors had to be evacuated.

The other gunman believed to have barged into the apartment at 3129 Cedar Brook Drive, off E. Ponce De Leon Avenue, still hasn’t been identified. He reportedly stood about 5-foot-8, had an "island" accent and called himself "Killer Max."

After hearing testimony from the detective, Magistrate Judge Lindsay Jones found probable cause for the state to proceed with its case against Subar in superior court.

McQuilkin said Bryant was asleep on the couch in the apartment when the men came in, his roommate and roommate’s girlfriend in another room.

It was before 11 a.m.

The men rounded up the three and put them in a closet.

The intruders ransacked the place.

Bryant eventually had enough.

“Mr. Bryant indicated he was not going to let this happen and left the closet,” McQuilkin said.

Bryant was shot in the chest and lay on the floor as the crooks fled.

It isn't clear why the apartment was chosen. The surviving victims told police they had never seen Subar before. The detective said he knew of no indication that drugs were at the apartment.

Defense attorney Mike Maloof Sr., who’s been retained for Subar, and family of the defendant declined to comment after the hearing.
