A Brookhaven man was arrested on a bevy of felony charges after his alleged victim texted 911 and reported being held captive, police said.

The woman texted 911 about 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, according to a statement from Brookhaven police Monday. Dispatchers at the Chattahoochee River Valley 911 Authority (better known as “ChatComm”) began receiving messages in Spanish, and used an online service to translate the texts.

The dispatchers learned that the woman said “she was being held captive by a man with a gun,” police said.

They exchanged texts with her to learn her location, and sent Brookhaven officers to an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Buford Highway, police said.

Officers heard a physical altercation in one of the apartments, and forced entry inside. They found the victim and arrested David Renard Devaughn, 34. They also performed a search at the apartment and found a gun, ammunition, cocaine and marijuana, according to police.

According to DeKalb County court records, Devaughn was charged with aggravated assault by strangulation, armed robbery, trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Records show he was denied bond on Sept. 13 and remains held at the DeKalb jail.

Brookhaven police announced his arrest Monday and reminded the public that when they want to reach a 911 dispatcher, they should  “call when you can, text if you can’t.”
