A construction worker fell into manhole in front of Emory ER across from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, police said.

The incident happened on Clifton Road at Gambrell Drive about 3:15 p.m. Friday, police said.

The construction company was working on a new wing of Emory University Hospital, when a man fell 20 feet into a hole at the construction site, DeKalb Fire spokesman Captain Eric Jackson said.

Rescue workers were not sure why the man fell.

Two firefighters went into the hole with ropes and hoisted the construction worker to street level, Jackson said. He was taken to a trauma center in stable condition.

“He was alert, conscious and breathing,” Jackson said.
