Tim Ste. Marie of Vinings took this photo on May 10 of a 14th century stone defensive tower in Strasbourg, France. “In the background is the historic Vauban Dam, built in 1690 over the River Ill,” he wrote. Strasbourg, is the capital of Alsace region of eastern France. It lies 2.5 miles west of the Rhine River on the Franco-German frontier. The city was originally a Celtic village, and under the Romans it became a garrison town called Argentoratum. It was captured in the 5th century by the Franks, who called it Strateburgum, from which the present name is derived.
