Ex-college librarian charged with child exploitation

A former, longtime librarian at Reinhardt University is accused of having images of child pornography in his office, Cherokee County police said Tuesday.

Michael Martinez, 59, of Esom Hill, was arrested Tuesday and charged with six counts of child exploitation, according to Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

University officials alerted the sheriff's office, and deputies were sent to Martinez' former office at the school, Baker said.

Martinez, who had been on administrative leave since Jan. 23, resigned from his job Feb. 17, Marsha White, university spokesman, told the AJC. Martinez had been employed at the university since November 2004, White said.

Martinez was booked into the Cherokee County jail, where he remained Tuesday afternoon without bond, Baker said.

Reinhardt is in Waleska, in north Cherokee County. Esom Hill is in Polk County in west Georgia, about 70 miles from the university.
