The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office has received several complaints about a telephone scam in which a male represents himself tells the resident that they need to pay a fine in order to avoid having an arrest warrant issued.

The caller represents himself as an employee of the Sheriff’s Office and tells the resident that they failed to appear for jury duty. Sheriff Neil Warren says the caller demands that the victim make payment using a Walmart money card.

“Once they purchase the card, the victim is instructed to provide the card number to the caller,” Warren said. “This type of scam has been used for many years and is making a comeback. The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office would not contact a citizen demanding payment of a fine nor does the Sheriff’s Office have the authority to dismiss a warrant.”

Warren said any person with a question about jury duty service should call the Superior Court Jury Administrator at 770-528-1757 or the State Court Jury Administrator at 770-528-2628.

Anyone receiving a phone call similar to this is asked to call the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Unit, at 770-499-4653.
