With the one-year anniversary of Philip Lutzenkirchen’s passing on Monday, the Cobb County Board of Education agreed 7-0 Thursday to accept a $332,422 donation from the Lutzie 43 Foundation to replace the artificial turf at Lassiter High School’s Frank Fillmann Stadium and name the field “Lutzie 43 Field.”
Lutzenkirchen died in a one-vehicle accident as a passenger in a car driven by a friend who also died.
Both were ejected when not wearing seatbelts, and both had been drinking.
Speaking to many students at high schools and colleges across the nation about his only son’s choices, Mike Lutzenkirchen told the board members that when people visiting the field ask “Who is Lutzie?” it will be an opportunity to talk about making right choices.
An NFL St. Louis Rams tight end and a starting Auburn University tight end who set school records, Lutzenkirchen “did a lot of right things,” his father said.
When scoring the winning touchdown against Alabama to help Auburn eventually secure the 2010 national title, Philip performed a dance in the end zone that was called “The Lutzie.”
