Eight days after scores of people were killed and hundreds were injured during a country music festival in Las Vegas, police in Marietta want to bring folks together.
Marietta Police Department said its Oct. 9 event will let people remember those lost in Las Vegas but it will also prepare them with strategies they say could help them in a similar situation.
“When a tragedy like Las Vegas occurs, the general public can find themselves wondering if local authorities are ready if something like this happened close to home. This gathering is the place to bring your questions and concerns,” Marietta police said.
Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old retiree, indiscriminately sprayed rounds into the crowd of 22,000 at the Route 91 Harvest as Georgia's Jason Aldean played on stage.
Police said Paddock was shooting from his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel hundreds of yards away. Authorities said they found him dead in the room.
At the Monday event, Marietta police will “educate the public on how their actions in an event like Las Vegas can help first responders end the event with as few casualties as possible.”
Due to the frankness of the conversation, police don’t recommend bringing children under the age of 13.
Attendees are asked to register online for the event, which runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Marietta Performing Arts Center, 1171 Whitlock Ave.
Arrive at 5:45 p.m. to view several examples of first responder vehicles that one would see at an active-shooter situation.
