DeKalb County officials 9,240 gallons of raw sewage spilled over a manhole cover Thursday morning on Buford Highway and into the North Fork of Peachtree Creek.

The cause of the spill in the 3400 block of the road was unknown but was repaired by a plumber hired by the private business owner at the site, according to county water reports.

DeKalb plans a $1.35 billion upgrade to its water and sewer system in the next year to meet a federal Environmental Protection Agency consent decree.
