Emergency management, transportation and water officials are assessing the infrastructure of the roadway and water main on Windsor Drive at West Jester’s Creek following the discovery of a sinkhole overnight Friday. According to a press release, continual heavy rainfall led to a sinkhole, which undermined the portion of the roadway and led to a water main break, resulting in the temporary closure of the westbound lane. Traffic control measures are in place to safely guide motorists around the work zone. Motorists are urged to use caution and to avoid the area if possible.
The water main break was reported to the Clayton County Water Authority around midnight Thursday CCWA’s after hour crews were onsite by 1 a.m. Friday. By 5 a.m., the repairs were made to the water line and service was restored to approximately 45 homes. The Clayton County Department of Transportation and the Clayton County Office of Emergency Management were also notified. Crews from all three agencies are determining the best action plan.
One lane of the roadway is deemed safe for vehicular traffic. Road crews worked throughout the weekend to complete temporary repairs of the area. In addition to the temporary repairs, plans for a more permanent repair are underway. Crews will eventually rebuild the entire culvert and compromised section of roadway where Jester’s Creek passes underneath. Officials estimate that it will take approximately five months to complete the new construction.
No interruption of utility service or public safety access is expected. Residents will be kept informed by emergency management personnel if there are any changes in the conditions. More updates will follow as work progresses.
