A veteran City of Atlanta engineer died Thursday from injuries following a three-vehicle wreck.

Gholamreza Bavani, 64, was driving a city vehicle on Marietta Street at Andrew Young International Boulevard when he hit from behind Wednesday morning, according to Officer John Chafee with Atlanta police.

The driver who struck Bavani's vehicle, whose name was not released, then struck a motorcycle, Chafee said. Bavani had to be extricated from his vehicle, police said.

Bavani, of Suwanee, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition following the wreck. He died the following day, according to police.

Bavani had been employed with the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management since 1985, Janet Ward, department spokeswoman, told the AJC Friday afternoon. He is survived by a wife and two sons, Ward said.

The driver who struck Bavani was cited for following too closely, police said.
