Keeping chickens in residential areas of Fayette County is now legal.

The Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 on July 28 to allow up to six chickens to be housed on a minimum one-acre lot, as well as three more chickens per additional acre. The birds must be contained in coops on side or back yards only, with a 50-foot setback, and occupy no more than 40 percent of the lot.

Roosters are not allowed, but slaughtering chickens on site will be. Homeowner association covenants can still restrict keeping chickens.
