The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved an agreement with the city of Woodstock for the county to serve as project manager to help close a roughly four mile gap in the Noonday Creek Trail south of Woodstock into Cobb County.

As Cherokee County is certified to administer federally funded projects and Woodstock is not, the city needs the county’s participation so it can pursue $96,000 in federal transportation funds. The city would reimburse the county for its expenses including a 20 percent local match, estimated at $24,000, of preliminary engineering costs.

So far, Woodstock has completed about 1.5 miles of the Noonday Creek Trail from Market Street downtown south to Ga. 92. Plans call for the path to be extended south for two miles to Shallowford Road and Noonday Park. Cobb is to extend its portion of the path north to link up with Woodstock’s.

Once connected to Cobb’s system, the Woodstock trail would be part of a network extending beyond Marietta to the Silver Comet Trail in southern Cobb and the Beltline Trail in the city of Atlanta.
