Months of on-and-off wrangling ended this week as the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a deal under which Cherokee County firefighters will operate a new city of Canton fire station.

The city will build the new station in northwest Canton at the entrance to the Laurel Canyon subdivision and the county will staff it, moving people and equipment from an outdated county station nearby. The agreement is for five years and will renew automatically if both sides so choose.

The Canton City Council had balked at aspects of the proposed deal before approving it in late February.

“It’s been a long road, but we’re there, and for all the right reasons,” said commission chair L.B “Buzz” Ahrens. City and county officials have estimated the deal will save as much as $1.5 million.
