A public hearing is to be held this month on Cherokee County moving up the due date for ad valorem property taxes to Nov. 15 from Dec. 20, starting with the 2018 tax year.

The Board of Commissioners has scheduled the hearing for 6 p.m. May 16 at the Cherokee County Administration Building, 1130 Bluffs Parkway, Canton.

County officials have said the new deadline accommodates the Cherokee County School District, which has had to borrow money every fall while awaiting the tax revenues, and to put some distance between when taxes are due and the holidays.

Cherokee’s new deadline would not apply to this year’s tax collection.
