The Cherokee County School Board has declared surplus the former North Canton/L.R. Tippens Elementary School in Canton and has approved advertising it for sale.

Constructed in 1966 as an elementary school on a roughly 4.5 acre site at 8 Glenwood St., its main building has 18 classrooms and totals 24,400 square feet; there’s also a 10,600-square-foot gymnasium.

The facility later housed the Tippens Education Center for special needs students, until Tippens moved to its present home at 2450 Holly Springs Parkway, Holly Springs, in 2015.

The Office of Support Services will market the property for at least 60 days to gauge interest, a school district spokeswoman said. The district has the option of issuing a request for qualifications from real estate brokers if its own efforts do not attract satisfactory offers.
