A spokesman for the Cherokee County Schools is on unpaid leave after a December arrest for driving under the influence.
Michael Joseph McGowan, 40, was pulled over just before midnight on Dec. 17 after concerned callers alerted police that a gray Mazda truck almost hit a car and was driving on the wrong side of the road on Reinhardt College Parkway. McGowan, who is the public information officer, requested the extended leave Friday after a meeting with district officials.
According to the Cherokee sheriff's office, McGowan was also arrested for DUI in 1998 and 2003.
In a memo, Superintendent Frank Petruzielo told board members they could ask further personnel-related questions in a closed meeting Jan. 20.
According to a report following the incident, police found six Michelob Ultra bottle caps in McGowan's front pants pocket and two empty bottles of the beer on the truck's floorboard. The district was investigating McGowan for misconduct.
